Located in the historic gold rush town of Mokelumne Hill on Highway 49, French Hill Winery owes its name to the French trappers and prospectors who roamed the red clay and gravelly slopes of Calaveras County in the 1840s. Specializing in Cal-Italia varietals, Owner/Winemaker Rod Ruthel sources grapes from the Sierra Foothills to make wines that set high standards of excellence. French Hill wines consistently win top awards in major competitions. Production is very limited and only premium quality wines are offered for sale. Rod Ruthel is also a noted artist and designer who has created highly acclaimed wine labels and other works of art.
