After more than two decades Twisted Oak Winery is closing its doors, marking the end of an era in the Calaveras wine community. From its very first vintage, Twisted Oak quickly distinguished itself as a winery that dared to be different, through its quirky and playful approach to winemaking and marketing.
Twisted Oak's motto, "Are You Twisted?," was more than just a slogan; it was a philosophy. Their unconventional branding, which featured rubber chickens as mascots, oddball humor, a "twisted" back entrance and a refusal to take the wine industry too seriously, set Twisted Oak apart from its peers. The winery's tongue-in-cheek approach appealed to those looking for a fun, approachable experience in a industry often known for tradition and heritage.
Owner Jeff "El Jefe" Stai’s role in shaping not only his own winery but also the local wine community cannot be overstated. Gay Callan, president of the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance, perfectly captured his impact: “Jeff is an innovator and reached beyond the norm with his ideas! He brought a lot of whimsy to our industry and made it less serious, which also was a great addition to our area, while his wines were delightful!”
Beyond his creative flair, Stai was a strong advocate for the Calaveras wine region. He drew attention to the area, drawing both wine aficionados and casual sippers to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. His ability to balance innovation with tradition made Twisted Oak a beloved fixture.
As Twisted Oak closes, it leaves behind a legacy of joy, creativity, and excellent wine. Though the winery may no longer produce bottles, its impact will continue to be felt throughout the region. Jeff's playful spirit and passion for wine made Twisted Oak not just a business, but a cherished part of the Calaveras community.
The retirement of Twisted Oak Winery is bittersweet for its many fans, but the memories, laughter, and extraordinary wines will live on. Jeff's innovation and dedication to making wine fun have left an indelible mark on the wine industry, one that will be fondly remembered by all who experienced it.
Wishing you the best on your next adventure!
